What a GA4 purchase event needs
A purchase event that reports revenue needs four things: the event name purchase, a value, a currency, and a transaction_id. The transaction ID is the most important. It lets GA4 recognise an order it has already seen, so a page refresh does not add the same sale again.
Step 1: Find where the order details appear
Open the order confirmation page after a test purchase. Find the order number, the amount and the currency. Kajabi page layouts differ between products and themes, so confirm the values on your own page, not on a sample.
Step 2: Push the order into the data layer
- On the confirmation page, read the order number, total and currency.
- Push a
purchaseevent withtransaction_id,valueandcurrency. - Use a plain number for the value, for example 99.00, without currency symbols.
Step 3: Send it to GA4 from Google Tag Manager
- Create a Custom Event trigger on
purchase. - Create a GA4 Event tag named
purchase. Map the data layer values to the event parameters. - Mark
purchaseas a key event in GA4, so it appears in your conversion reports.
Step 4: Stop double counting
If the thank-you page reloads, or a customer returns to it, the same purchase can fire again. Use the transaction ID to prevent this. In GA4, each transaction ID is counted once. Test by reloading the confirmation page and checking that the transaction count stays the same.
Check the numbers
- Compare the GA4 revenue for one day with the Kajabi orders for the same day.
- Check that the currency matches the currency of your Kajabi store.
- Check that test orders are excluded from your reports.
